Ask any stylist, the most wonderful aspect of styling and cutting hair is the sheer amount of options you have to create a unique and eye-catching style. We’ve cut our fair share of heads and in a variety of styles at The Salon Project. One thing we’ve noticed is that many women and men alike are wary of razor cuts or are entirely unaware of them! This is a shame, as the razor is a unique styling tool that can be used to achieve hairstyles that no other tool can.

What is a Razor Haircut?

For your typical haircut scissors are the bread and butter tools that are going to be used to craft an idiosyncratic style. With scissors, you can make clean cuts and create a very polished and fresh look. A proper stylist will undoubtedly layer your hair if its longer to allow for length without excessive bulk. These are the utmost basics of getting a quality haircut that’s stylish.

A razor haircut is when in addition to the traditional scissor cut, your stylist will use a straight razor to slice into the ends of your hair. There are two types of razors you will see when your stylist gives you this cut, one is a standard straight edge razor that might shock anyone who has never received a razor cut before. Your first thought may be, “you’re going to take that to my hair? No way!” The second is a similar razor but it has a guard to minimize any errors with the slip of the hand. The latter razor is used by novice stylists or those who are still new to razor cutting and have it there as a preventative measure. Either razor can do a splendid job at cutting hair.

What Type of Style Does a Razor Cut Produce?

Razor cuts are all about creating a lighter, wispier look. The opposite would be hair that is layered but ultimately still chunky and characterized by blunt ends. Instead, when you get a razor cut you’re creating very light sections of hair that will practically float. This creates a very rock n’ roll type of look that gives off the impression of effortless cool.

One of the major caveats of getting a razor cut is that it’s a difficult technique to get the most value out of. Not every stylist is trained with a razor, and for everyone that knows how to use one, there are plenty who say they do but truly don’t. This is why it’s of critical importance you entrust your precious head of hair with experienced and professional stylists. Going to a high-end salon such as The Salon Project for this type of cut is highly recommended.

Why is Razor Cutting So Hard?

There’s no shortage of resources to learn how to properly cut hair with scissors at a proficient level. However, cutting hair with a razor requires much more dexterity and sleight of hand, as well as an adept understanding of how your client’s hair likes to move naturally.

What Type of Hair is Razor Cutting Best For?

Typically, razor cuts have been thought to be best on hair that is mostly straight and not prone to frizziness. The reason for this is that when your stylist shaves into the hair strand at an angle towards the ends, they are essentially making the hair lighter and airier. This works great with hair that is not prone to frizzing since there’s far less chunkiness to give definition.

However, if your hair IS prone to frizz—especially curly hair, razor cuts are an even more difficult proposition. It was long thought that they should be avoided on curly heads of hair since we tend to prize curly locks that are highly defined and have minimal flyaways and frizz.

This couldn’t be further from the truth though. In skilled hands, nobody stands to benefit from a good razor cut than those with weighty, curly hair. While many people believe that using a razor will result in more frizz, if your stylist is capable enough to cut “with the grain” of your curls—so to speak, you can create incredible movement and definition in your curls that are otherwise not possible. As you may know, when hair is lighter and less weighed down, it is allowed to curl much more naturally.
